Proyecto de Pollitos

It all started with Maria.  We began our relationship with Maria by helping her pay her electric bill. This was followed by a conversation where we inquired how this single mother could earn an income.  She expressed the desire to raise and sell chickens.  Yet, without the upfront money to purchase them first, she was unable to get started.  We took this idea to prayer.

In doing a little research we came across an article written by Bill Gates of all people making the case that raising and selling chickens can really help women in developing countries.  He mentions that chickens are easy and inexpensive to take care of, they're a good investment, they help keep children healthy, and empower women.  He went on to write that "Because chickens are small and typically stay close to home, many cultures regard them as a woman’s animal, in contrast to larger livestock like goats or cows. Women who sell chickens are likely to reinvest the profits in their families."

Apparently the women here agree.  The chicken business is spreading like crazy.  We have had a steady stream of women come and ask to be a part of the "Proyecto de Pollitos".  The project is very small, but it's a start.  The idea is for them to sell their chickens and set aside their earnings to buy their next round of chickens and feed, with any remaining money as profit. We provide the first twenty chickens and their feed, with the agreement that they raise five for us.  They seem to be taking the project seriously and with pride.  Please pray for these women as they strive to provide for their families.

  1. This is awesome! Our kids help with the chickens @ a nearby farm. It has been a great learning experience for our family. We have layers for eggs and meat birds we butcher. Are they sold as layers or meat birds? I am assuming the former. We continue to pray for you and the mission work God places before you. Glad to read an update.
